Virtual Author Visits Spark Joy, Excitement for Reading

Meeting an author or illustrator never fails to excite students and teachers. And Scholastic Book Fairs virtual visits give even more children an opportunity to "meet" vicariously with authors or illustrators. The goal of a virtual visit is simple: to encourage kids to read, thereby inspiring the next generation of writers and illustrators.

With the increased demand and need for programs that can be accessed at school and at home, we now have even more visits for you to choose from. We’ve added hundreds of new 30-minute sessions to our fall catalog.

Hosting a virtual visit is easy. Here’s how it works:

  • Each session can be purchased using your Scholastic Dollars, the unique profit currency for book fair customers, and includes a package of 150 paperback books (or 75 hardcovers when they are the only available format).
  • The packaged books are shipped to you at least four weeks before your virtual event to allow sufficient time to prepare your students for the visit.
  • During the first fifteen minutes of the session, the author shares information about their books, including the writing and revision processes, so the topic is both informational and entertaining.
  • Illustrators usually demonstrate how they create their characters and environments.
  • The remaining time is set aside for students to ask questions based on the book they read and other books by the same visiting author.
  • Although Skype or Zoom can be used, Zoom is easiest for students when they’re attending school from home.
  • The selection of guest authors and illustrators is broad, reaching all grade levels, genres and interests - you can choose from a variety of sessions that will appeal to children from Kindergarten through 8th grade.
  • Best of all, as part of the experience, we offer a one-on-one orientation with you or your school host to help make sure everything goes off without a hitch.

And just like our book fairs, our virtual visits feature authors and illustrators from the best publishers from around the world. Here are just some of the virtual visits you can look forward to: Alan Gratz, Raina Telgemeier, Lauren Tarshis, Ben Clanton, Katherine Applegate, Sharon Draper, Ame Dyckman, Max Brallier, Jennifer A. Nielsen, Tom Angleberger, Luke Flowers, Francisco X. Stork, Juana Martinez-Neal, Christina Soontornvat … and dozens more!

We have an incredible line-up of visits and add more every month. Follow us on social media to hear about just-announced virtual visits you and your students won’t want to miss.
